Even a few years ago, hell a few seasons ago I was completely wary of mixing my prints. But so much of what was fashion faux-pas isn't anymore. So, I guess I'm very cautiously dipping my toes into experimenting with prints. There are still some rules involved because you don't want to look completely crazy -unless that's what you're working towards! Normally, you want the print mixing to look cool and effortless rather than corny and trying too hard.
#1: Stick to one colour story
This, to me, is quite a simple yet mostly overseen rule. There are multiple shades within a colour and sticking to a common colour with a tonal range would do more to unify your outfit. You can also try finding a unifying colour which can tie your outfit together - which is something you can probably do with pieces in your wardrobe to start with!
#2: Match the colours instead of the prints
This is a more commonly known rule. If the colours match, then chances are the prints match too. If you're in dilemma, go with black and white - you can never go wrong! But in general, complementary colours go together. So match up the base colours more so than the prints - makes life so much easier!
#3: Trust the Classics
Classics exist for a reason - they'd never be wrong. In the world of prints, stripes, dots and leopard prints are the neutrals. So, if you're a newbie at mixing prints, don't fret. Try it out with mixing of Breton stripes with animal prints or even florals and then just play with it and see how far you want to go!
#4: Match the prints in the same family
Okay, this is a fail-safe trick! Mixing of prints that are similar can work beautifully. Mixing floral prints by mixing smaller or ditzy floral with huge ones could be quite fun. Or even mixing plaids of different sizes together. You get the gist don't you? If you want to use the same print, inverting them to create contrast is a good route too.
#5: Break it all up
Introduce a solid into the mixed patterns to help the outfit pair up seamlessly. The last thing you'd want is for it to look like an overwhelming mixture of prints.
So there! More than anything, have fun with it :)
Give me a shoutout if you use any of these rules or let me know if you have any that you use!
Cheers!
