Some trends would stay on for aeons and then those that are there for one hot minute and then die a tragic death without anyone's notice. Guess which ones are my kind of trends?
I have no problem following trends. My problem with most transient trends is that they stop being relevant quite quickly and I am stuck with pieces in my wardrobe I've no purpose for! After a few years of following those kinds of trends, I've started only buying into trends that would keep returning.
#1: Animal Print
This is one of those trends I never see dying. Animal prints have been relevant since the 18th century when they were actual animal hides. I'd rather not any of my animal prints have the death of any actual animal, thank you very much! Animal prints are like neutrals, they work with absolutely anything. I've made a habit of never throwing out my leopard prints and just storing them because they always make a comeback. Invest in a nice animal print blazer or jacket which you can hold onto forever. If you are really brave, try the cow print trend!
#2: Menswear
Even though I don't wear much menswear, I still understand that it's always going to be around. Ever since the 1920's when women started wearing trousers, the trend hasn't abated. It was perfect for the modern woman on the go and still is! Contrary to popular belief, menswear accentuates the feminine details in your wardrobe. Pair a well-fitting blazer over your frilly dresses and you'll see what I mean.
#3: Miniskirts
I don't know if Mary Quant realised the impact miniskirts would have on future generations when she popularised them. But, I for one, thank her for them! The youthfulness and the optimism of a mini have no equivalent. I figure a mini is the most wonderful form of a rebellion. Asos and Topshop are stocking up on their minis and Burberry SS19 had a cow-print mini on one of their models. So, what's the wait? Pull out one of those minis and wear them with your tights and flat shoes!
#4: Florals
Florals have always been part of fashion. It's a story as old as time itself. Flowers and being women have always gone hand-in-hand. You could opt for subtle, watercolour florals or the flower power à la the 60's. It's completely your choice! My wardrobe and accessories have always been choke full of florals and I've always worn them irrespective of what season we are in.
#5: Ladylike
The infusion of lady-like values into your outfit has never gone out of style ever since Dior's New Look. It just evolves in a manner that fits with what would be relevant for any particular period. The nipped waist and flared skirt of a fit and flare dress have always been one of my favourite looks. But, I would opt for separates I could mix and match instead today. Adding a pretty pair of heels with a pair of jeans or even jogger bottoms can make them ladylike!
Well, I am sure many more trends have had longer staying power in the market. But, these are some of those who've had an influence that has transcended the years.
Let me know what you think :)
Cheers!
