Moving to London

Moving from what's familiar is never easy. Even for someone who's spent almost all her life on the move. So, rest assured, there were a lot of things that ran through my mind when I was contemplating the move to England.

I always thought that the next time I'd be moving would be for a job or internship. I wasn't actually planning to stay in university forever, you know! But, when a great opportunity presents itself you grab onto it for dear life. That's exactly what I did. They always tell you not to look a gift horse in the mouth, and I take such warnings pretty seriously.

Moving to London or somewhere in Europe has always been on the cards. Why? Well, I have studied and worked in fashion. The melting point of anything authentically fashion is always in Europe, at least in my opinion The cutting age of everything begins somewhere in that zone. Wouldn't you be closer to the inception point and place than anywhere else?

I've had quite a few friends who live in England and Europe. When I spoke to a few who worked in the industry, I heard about how many opportunities I could have that I wouldn't probably anywhere else in the world. All of it sounded too good to be true, but at that point, I was willing to take a risk.

The most overwhelming part of the move - other than the visa process - was the packing. More so, it was trying to figure out how much of what I wore in the States would I use in London. It was a culling process that I am now quite proud of! London is colder and wetter than Atlanta by any comparison. So, I had to pack differently. Invest in a heavy-duty jacket, you'd need it!

I read up on the kind of apps I would need. This might seem trivial, but it helps a lot! The Tube Map app has saved my life on multiple occasions. There are cultural things that you'd pick up when you move to a place, pay attention and observe. It makes life easier, trust me. Whether you are visiting or moving, do a little bit of research, I always like knowing what's accessible to me in a new city.

So far, London has treated me immensely well. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for the future. But, I reckon it'll work out.

Cheers! Madhu x
