I have a thing about heels. A very serious commitment to them. I've always been petite but even if I was built like an Amazonian, I'd have worn heels! Despite being such a sucker for a pair of heels, I am very picky when I'm buying them. There are some factors I look for and I take forever to choose -- which is incredibly good for my bank account, truth be told.
So, my number one rule when I buy heels: Comfort. I know that the major consensus would be that if it's heels how can they be comfy? But, they can still be comfortable! I have had some pairs I have stood in close to 8 to 10 hours without my feet hurting -- which is quite important when you are in PR or Fashion based jobs!
The trick I use when buying shoes is that I buy them later in the day -- mostly after I've had a full day or work or chores. That;'s when my feet might be tired or swollen -- which is perfect. Because this way I'd be naturally a half-size up from my normal size. But more importantly, it's incredibly easy to wean off those that would be uncomfortable right off the bat when you use this trick! And sizing half a size up is a frequent trick used on the red carpet by fashion experts -- so I am on the right path!
I also pick shoes which have some oomph factor to them -- either as a bold color or quirky details. That gives them a little something extra, in my opinion. I have recently become very interested in animal prints -- but so far have nothing new in my collection! I use my heels to amp up any outfit which in opinion might be a little too drab. Anything looks fashionable if you add a great pair of shoes to it.
