Old-fashioned American diners have a special spot in my heart. This started when I moved to the States. Cheap comfort food is something young students are exceptionally happy about. I was no different. But, when I moved (again!) to London, I wanted to find something authentic or at the very least close to authentic. I found The Diner at the Spitalfields Market, which was extremely close to where I lived. I was thrilled at this find! During my first week in London, I had a meal there -- a milkshake.
Do you remember those diners in the early 20's and 40's? Lots of sitcoms had them, like 'I Love Lucy' and currently even 'Riverdale' has them! For me, those are the figments of the past I'd never want to fade. Diners have always been my comfort food space. Usually after an incredibly long day, bad date/day I'd like to go to a diner and have a side of fries and a milkshake. Very rarely do I feel like getting a burger alone, because I'd never be able to finish it!
I am a fan of The Diner in particular for a lot of reasons. I LOVE their chocolate milkshakes. They're absolutely perfect. The milkshake comes in those traditional milkshake glasses and the extra from the blender jug goes into this stainless steel tumbler which sits right next to your glass. So, you get more than double the quantity for the price. I've always liked such deals. You can make it malt, mix flavours (if you are the adventurous sort!) or substitute milks. I like it plain old-fashioned chocolate or vanilla. Though, I did get a mix of both once and it was just a lighter, milkier chocolate, to be honest. They have a wide variety of fries to choose from. If I am getting a vanilla shake, I'd get the no-nonsense normal fries. Why? Because sometimes I dip my fries in my shake. Weird? Maybe, but its yum. So, don't knock it till you try it. But the diner fries which have a kick of spice is also a great choice. Always, ask for garlic mayo. I do.
The best part of the restaurant, in my opinion? The allergy menu and the vegan menu! Many people have allergies to various ingredients in food these days. Instead of restricting what you can eat, an allergy menu gives you options where you can substitute or remove a particular part of the dish from the get-go. This has been a particular lifesaver for me. Saves a reaction and a trip to the ER!
Try out The Diner if you're in my side of London! And let me know what you think :)
Cheers!
